JUDAS AND THE FOUR CUPS

Judas Iscariot likely participated in the first and second cups of the Passover meal—the Cup of Sanctification and the Cup of Plagues/Proclamation—before leaving.
He likely departed before the third cup (Cup of Redemption), which Jesus instituted as the New Covenant.

Cup 1 (Sanctification): The meal began with a blessing, which Judas likely partook in.

Cup 2 (Plagues): Following the dipping of the bitter herbs (which Judas shared with Jesus), this cup was shared.

Cup 3 (Redemption): Most traditions hold that Judas departed (John 13:30) before Jesus passed this cup, which is associated with the new covenant in His blood.

Cup 4 (Acceptance/Hallel): As this was the final cup, Judas was not present for this, as it coincides with the post-meal conclusion.

Some interpretations suggest that Judas did not participate in any of the cups and departed immediately after the dipping of the sop.

The four cups of Passover are an integral part of the Passover celebration. They stand for each of the four promises the Lord makes to His people in

Exodus 6:6-7.

The Cup of Sanctification

“I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”

The Cup of Deliverance

“I will rescue you from their bondage.”

The Cup of Redemption

“I will redeem you with an outstretched arm.”

The Cup of Praise

“I will take you as My people.”

The Afikomen and Jesus Christ

Have you ever heard of the afikomen? This is such an important part of a Passover Seder, yet is often considered to be a tradition shrouded in mystery by the Jewish community.

However, for believers in Jesus, the afikomen might be considered to be one of the most symbolic parts of the seder!

Early on in the seder, three pieces of matzah are set aside. The middle piece is removed from the trio and broken in half. The larger half of the broken matzah is the afikomen and is wrapped in linen.

In many traditions, the seder leader then hides the afikomen from the children, who search for it. It is then redeemed for a small gift.

Now… when Jesus celebrated His last passover with His disciples (aka The Last Supper!), He gave them matzah as a symbol of His body… unleavened (without sin), striped, and pierced.

If you recall back to earlier, do you remember at the beginning of a seder meal how the matzah is broken, wrapped in linen, and hidden away? And then how it reappears after the meal (when found by the children)?

For believers in Jesus, the afikomen represents Jesus’ body broken, wrapped in linen, and buried . . . and raised (reappeared) on the third day! Jesus seems to point to this symbolism at the Last Supper (Luke 22:19).

As mentioned above, the afikomen is often considered by the Jewish community to be a tradition shrouded in mystery. Yet it’s a pretty remarkable symbol of Jesus/Yeshua – the Jewish Messiah!
